Charlotte York's Elizabeth Taylor

No, it's not the actress who played Cleopatra and ignited the screen in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. This Elizabeth Taylor is the little and adorable King Charles Spaniel (on the right) owned by Charlotte York, one of the main characters from the tv show Sex and the City. It is given to Charlotte on the very last season, when she most needed confort for not being able to have children. A very suitable gift if you consider the roots of this breed: as you may know, King Charles Spaniels were used as lap dogs for the royalty, thought of as even therapeutic. And being this the set of Sex and the City, it's only fitting that even the dog wears Burberry. 

Some celebrities who couldn't resist the charm of the Spaniels include Lauren Bacall, Teri Hatcher, Ronald Reagan, Liv Tyler, and Jennifer Love-Hewitt. Who can blame them? Seriously, look at that face!

Billy Wilder had many hits as a director. From the acclaimed The Apartment and Sunset Boulevard, to A Foreign Affair with Marlene Dietrich. For fans of Old Hollywood, these are names and titles that easily provoke sighs and smiles. But Some Like it Hot triggers another reaction: laughter. 

First and foremost, it is a great comedy: with such a witty script, eagerly punctuated by punchline, after punchline, after punchline, you're guaranteed two hours of non-stop fun. So for those of you who can overcome the barrier of black and white, this is a film of unbelievable timelessness, with comic situations that retain their originality and influence over 50 years later.

Good News, Bad News

First of all, I am not announcing a summer hiatus! Just hear me out:

You might have noticed things have been pretty slow around here. It's not because I don't feel like writing anymore, it's because I've been working on another blog. If you're a listener (I'd say long-time, but we've only had three episodes so far) of the Across the Universe Podcast, you already know what I'm talking about. To put it simply, I've decided to start blogging in Portuguese. That's right, my mother tongue is making a comeback. Or at least I am coming back to it.

After several years of writing in english, I thought it was best to stop when it became more natural to me than writing in my own language (the horror and shame of wanting to write exams in english!). I'm not leaving this version of Film Flare completely behind, since it will still be updated with at least what I post on the portuguese one. If the transitions happen smoothly, great; if not, I might have to consider manual translation. We'll give a try, yeah? Btw, I changed the layout to make it look exactly like the new Film Flare. Oh and I lost most of my comments because I was silly enough to believe IntenseDebate wanted the best for its users.

So this is not a goodbye, but rather a change of scenery. I know inevitably some of you won't keep track of me. However,  if you:

(a) speak portuguese 

(b) don't mind the dreadful google translating app (actually, it's not that bad, so far)

(c) enjoy looking at pretty pictures

     or

(d) are always up for challenge (it is quite a language),

Gatsby? What Gatsby?

Already three weeks later? Gosh, that went by fast. Okay so, I said there would be at least a new post until today. There isn't. I was thinking about a contribution to the Lamb's Movie of the Month, American Psycho. I even made banner some weeks ago. Hell, I read an essay on Bateman's personality. That's right, an essay. And believe me when I say that, if I could, my Law thesis would be about Patrick Bateman. I have just over two years to come up with a plausible connection.

Anyway, this new episode (aired wednesday...) breaks our style in a way: we discuss a NEW release, a rare occurrence which can only be justified by high expectations and a fortunate worldwide premiere. It's The Great Gatsby, obviously. As a heads up... opinions range from meh to WOW. Also, we (meaning, I) sound like meangirls in the beginning. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty judgy on this one. Enjoy.
